BMW Announces Pricing on All-New 2013 640i Gran Coupe

BMW has announced the pricing for the all-new 2013 640i Gran Coupe will start at $76,895. This includes the $895 destination and handling fee for the twin-turbo six-cylinder powered-coupe. The Gran Coupe will be arriving at dealerships later this summer and will be joined by a V-8 variant at the end of the summer. Pricing for the V-8 640i Gran Coupe will be released closer to its scheduled launch date.

BMW has promised the 640i will produce 315 horsepower as supplied by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine. With a 0-62 time of 5.4 seconds, BMW also promises driving enthusiasts and people who use the 640i as a daily ride won’t be disappointed. Early fuel-economy tests estimate the 640i to get 30.1 mpg combined while official EPA figures won’t be released until closer to the 640i’s official launch date.

The all-new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe is slated to make its world debut at the Geneva Auto Show next month. It will make its first official appearance stateside at the New York Auto Show in April. Stay tuned as more details about the all-new 2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe surface.

2013 BMW X6 Gets a Refresh, High-Output M Performance Packages

As they do with celebutante Kim Kardashian, most people fail to understand the BMW X6. But while Kim is always burnishing her image, the X6 is just now receiving its first major revision, one that includes a mild face lift and some enhancements under the skin. (Each also has a giant—er, skip that one.)

The X6′s front end has been tweaked to keep it more in line with the rest of the BMW lineup. Some new colors have been added to the palette and a new wheel design is available, too. We’ll leave it to you to decide whether this nip/tuck suits BMW’s 5000-plus-pound crossover. Adaptive LED headlights are now available as an upgrade to the standard xenon units.

More exciting, of course, is that BMW now will offer M Performance packages for both the turbocharged 3.0-liter six and the twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8. Additional power comes as a result of cranking up the turbo boost; on the six, output rises from 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque to 315 hp and 330 lb-ft. (These are just a shade lower than the 320 hp and 332 lb-ft delivered by the Performance Edition package in the outgoing 335i, which featured the same engine; the difference is attributable to different intake and exhaust plumbing in the two vehicles.) The M Performance upgrade will increase output in the V-8–toting X6 xDrive50i by 40 hp and 30 lb-ft, for totals of 440 and 480. The package also includes aesthetic touches like 20-inch wheels, black chrome exhaust tips, and dark window trim.

We in the States may not have the chance to buy one of the triple-turbo diesel M Performance models announced for Europe today, but the M Performance packages we are getting are at least small consolation. The Performance Edition pack for the 3-series costs just $550; hopefully these M Performance tweaks won’t add much more to an X6. It also seems like it wouldn’t be difficult to offer similar upgrades for other U.S. models using these engines—so pretty much BMW’s entire lineup—although no plans to do so have been announced just yet.

The first BMW ActiveE electric car in North America was just delivered last Friday. Now, with only 600 miles on that car, we've driven it.
Our first impressions of BMW's final electric test car, converted from a standard BMW 1-Series two-door sedan, are favorable.

It's solid, comfortable, performs well, and feels far more like a production car than its predecessor, the Mini E.

We're on record as calling the Mini E crude and unlikable. That didn't stop its drivers from raving about it, but the ActiveE is simply a far, far better car that we found much more enjoyable to drive.

Our drive came courtesy of electric-car advocate and restauranteur Tom Moloughney, who took delivery of that first ActiveE and spent the weekend getting familiar with it.

He calls it an "electric tank" and highlighted how much more solid and integrated it was than his departed Mini E, which he said was "pretty obviously a conversion."

Sneak Peek: BMW i3 And i8 U.S. Debut Before LA Auto Show

Yesterday afternoon, BMW hosted a Special Sneak Peek Preview Event of the BMW i3 and BMW i8 concept electric cars in New York. Both cars will make their official U.S. debut at next week's Los Angeles Auto Show.

After an hour-long photo session, we were addressed by Richard Kim, exterior designer for the BMW i range, and Rich Steinberg, manager of electric vehicle operations and strategy.

Kim said that when he and his team were originally commissioned with the task of designing these cars, they worked from an office separate from their peers, to help them start with a clean slate. As a result, they developed the "stream flow" theme that will be incorporated into all cars in the new i line. This theme has two horizontal lines flowing down the sides of the vehicles, converging from the top and bottom into the C-pillar sweep. It is meant to represent streaks of air passing down the sides of the vehicles.

Like the classic Hofmeister Kink in the parent brand's second window line, the "stream flow" theme will be the trademark of all BMW i vehicles.

A video showed how the drivetrain of a conventional internal-combustion engine platform is laid out, and compared it to a car based on a retrofitted platform like the ActiveE. BMW Pairs Electric And Traditional Turbos To Boost Efficiency

To improve fuel efficiency, engines are gradually shedding accessory drives. Electric power steering is now commonplace, and electric air conditioning compressors are used on hybrid cars to keep them cool while the engine's off.

Now, BMW has taken a new tack to electrifying ancillary equipment: It's created a twin turbocharger setup in which one half, the compressor that operates at lower engine speeds, is run electrically rather than mechanically.

From idle to acceleration

The news came to light in a patent application that was covered on the F30Post forum, which said it might be used in a potential future "tri-turbo" BMW model.

The patent filing highlighted the design's superior engine response--especially during the transition from engine idle to full acceleration, in part because no mechanical "waste gate" valve needs to open and close to allow exhaust gases into the turbine that powers a turbocharger.

Instead, the compressor is powered by a simple electric motor. In fact, you could make the argument that the "electric turbo" is really more of an electric supercharger, since a turbocharger contains a turbine (hence its name) powered by hot exhaust gases--and the BMW invention doesn't.

2012 BMW 3 Series production starts today in Munich plant

The BMW Group is investing half a billion euros in building the new BMW 3 Series at the Munich plant, where series production launches today.

“The BMW 3 Series is the most important volume-produced model from the BMW Group as well as the biggest-selling model in the entire premium segment. To ensure that the sixth generation of the BMW 3 Series likewise leaves the factory in flawless quality, we have invested around 500 million euros in our Munich home plant. And that means safeguarding 9,000 workplaces,” said Frank-Peter Arndt, Member of the BMW AG Board of Management responsible for production, in Munich on Friday.

As series production of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan got under way, Christian Ude, Mayor of Munich, along with Manfred Schoch, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the BMW Group, also spoke before a large gathering of employees at the BMW plant in Munich.

“As Munich residents we can count ourselves fortunate that the decision to build the new 3 Series here signals a clear and impressive commitment to Munich on the part of BMW,” said Christian Ude. “BMW is not just one of our major employers and corporate tax payers, but beyond that also actively contributes to the wellbeing of the city.”

The production launch of the sixth-generation BMW 3 Series marks the start of a new era at the Munich home plant. BMW thinking about M5 all-wheel drive

The topic of a BMW M5 with an all-wheel drive system comes back to focus. Recently, Albert Biermann, BMW M’s head of R&D, said that an all-wheel drive M5 is on BMW’s radar to satisfy demand from the snow belt in the U.S. where all-wheel-drive vehicles from Mercedes and Audi are selling well.

But shortly after, Biermann defused the news by saying that an all-wheel drive system will only add complexity and unnecessary weight to the already large M5.

Now, Aussie-magazine Brisbane Times quotes BMW M5 Project Leader Max Ahme who says that BMW may consider an all-wheel drive system that could help cope with the constantly increasing power and torque.

“We’re thinking about it,” Ahme admitted at the launch of the new M5 in Spain. “If you are increasing the power more and more maybe you need it.”

Same as Biermann, the M5 project manager admits that the xDrive system comes with some major drawbacks, most notably weight and complexity.

“It’s a good idea but it would add 120kg to the car and it’s over the front axle,” he added.
Furthermore, Ahme revealed M Division engineers had examined the lightweight all-wheel drive system used on the Ferrari FF.

But how will this fit with BMW’s tradition of high-performance rear-wheel drive M cars?
M Division Product Management chief Jorg Herrmann says that the X5 M and X6 M broke the tradition with their all-wheel drive system and the company is looking at all possibilities to get the job done, if required.

An xDrive BMW M5 will compete against all-wheel-drive vehicles from Mercedes and Audi which are selling well in the United States.

BMW Manufacturing Receives Exporter of the Year Award Remains largest vehicle exporter from the U.S. to non-NAFTA markets.

Spartanburg, S.C. – September 29, 2011…BMW Manufacturing Co. announced today that the National Association of Foreign Trade Zones (NAFTZ) recognized the company for its significant contribution to the U.S. export industry.

BMW's plant in South Carolina has steadily increased its export activity. In 2009, the plant contributed more than $3.1 billion in exports. In 2010, the company's export value grew to well over $4 Billion annually. According to data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, the current value of BMW exports confirms the company’s Spartanburg facility as the largest vehicle exporter from the U.S. to non-NAFTA countries.

BMW’s plant in Spartanburg currently produces approximately 1,000 vehicles each day and is the exclusive exporter of passenger vehicles through the Port of Charleston. This year, the plant is projected to produce more than 260,000 vehicles and will export approximately 70% of those vehicles to more than 130 global markets.

BMW will build coupe-like X4, Reithofer says

FRANKFURT -- BMW AG will build a new coupe-like SUV called the X4 to fill the gap between its X3 and X6 models, CEO Norbert Reithofer was quoted as saying in a German magazine.

"Yes, we will position the X4 above the X3," Reithofer told Auto Motor und Sport.

The X4 will have similar styling to the X6 coupe-styled crossover and is is expected to compete against Porsche's new small SUV, the Cajun.

Details are yet to be announced for the model, but according to the report, the X4 will be 4650mm (183 inches) long, the same length as the X3, and 207mm (8.14 inches) shorter than the X5.

The new SUV will feature a similar design layout to the X6, with the bullish front end and sloping coupe lines of the bigger X6.

Strong sales of the X6, which easily beat targets announced at its launch in 2008, have proven the success of the model's distinctive coupe-like design.

The X4 is expected to come with the same powertrain options available in the X3. All models are also expected to feature BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system.

Moses Lake, Washington – September 1, 2011 SGL Automotive Carbon Fibers (SGL ACF) – a joint venture of SGL Group and the BMW Group – today officially opened its new state-of-the-art carbon fiber manufacturing plant in Moses Lake, WA. The new facility is strategic for the manufacture of ultra light-weight carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) for use in the new BMW i vehicles.

The two parent companies will invest approximately $100 million in their Moses Lake plant and create 80 new local jobs until 2013. In order to prepare the large scale production start of BMW i vehicles in 2013 it is important to start the carbon fiber manufacturing now. All electricity needed for the production of carbon fibers will come from readily available clean and renewable local hydropower.

Thanks to the emission-free drivetrain and a value added chain designed to be sustainable all along the line, life cycle emission figures for the BMW i3 are at least a third lower than for a highly efficient combustion-engine car. If the BMW i3 is run on electricity from renewable sources, the figures improve by well over 50%.

BMW vows no power loss with 4-cylinder U.S. sedan revival

DETROIT (BLOOMBERG) -- BMW AG, facing higher fuel-efficiency requirements under the Obama administration, is bringing four-cylinder engines back to the United States 12 years after it quit offering the slow-selling option.

BMW says it will offer a four-cylinder engine in its Z4 roadster and 5-series mid-sized sedans when they begin arriving at U.S. dealers in October, and the company says more nameplates will get the smaller engine with the Munich-based automaker's TwinPower turbo.

BMW dropped the engine from its 3-series line in 1999, when gasoline cost $1.14 a gallon.

"It wasn't in line with our image, because it didn't have the performance of the six cylinder," said Jim O'Donnell, head of BMW's U.S. operations. "We were selling ourselves as the ultimate driving machine and really it wasn't. Now that the engines have developed so far, it's not an issue at all."

BMW, this year's top-seller of luxury autos in the United States, joins Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen AG's Audi in bringing new turbocharged, four-cylinder engines to the world's second-biggest market as the Obama administration pushes the industry for increases in fuel efficiency to reduce dependency on imported oil.

The U.S. corporate average fuel economy, or CAFE, requirement is rising to 35.5 mpg by 2016 and to 54.5 mpg by 2025. It increases to 30.1 mpg this year, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, up from 27.5 mpg in 2010.

Regulatory driven
"CAFE is definitely driving this," O'Donnell said in an interview in Monterey, California. "This is huge for us. If we get this wrong, it screws up all of our plans in the U.S."

BMW's CAFE rating for passenger cars was 29.9 mpg in model year 2011 and 25.5 mpg for its light trucks, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration's Web site. Daimler's CAFE for passenger cars was 26.9 mpg and 21.1 mpg for light trucks.

Failure to meet U. S. requirements produces fines of $55 per mile below the requirement multiplied by the total number of vehicles sold, Greg Schroeder, a research analyst at the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan, said in a telephone interview.

Selling 200,000 vehicles with a CAFE 20 mpg below the target, for example, would lead to an annual fine of $220 million. "As the fuel economy doubles they have to change their plan," Schroeder, the industry analyst, said. "They're going to have to improve fuel economy, they can't just sit and pay fines forever."

Mercedes paid fines totaling $2.94 million in 2009, according to NHTSA's Web site. BMW paid $5.1 million in fines in 2006, the site said.

The M DCT with Drivelogic, developed especially for the new M5, has been tuned to the performance characteristics of this engine.

Getting and keeping the power down is made easier with the Active M Differential, an electronically controlled multi-plate limited-slip differential programmed to optimize traction and stability.

BMW’s classic roadster enters the 2012 model year as the first US model to receive BMW’s all-new TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine. The new 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo 4-Cylinder will first power the Z4 sDrive28i that will arrive in BMW Centers this fall. Like the company’s latest TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter turbo inline-6, the new 2.0-liter engine combines high-pressure direct injection and BMW’s VALVETRONIC intake control (hence the name: TwinPower) with a forced induction system consisting of a single twin-scroll turbocharger. With 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, it offers more power and torque than BMW’s normally aspirated 3.0-liter inline-6 that it replaces in the Z4 sDrive30i.

The Z4 sDrive35i with its twin-turbo inline six continues for 2012 as does the top-of the-line Z4 sDrive35is.

Chicagoans Get Sneak Peek at 2013 BMW i3 Electric Car [Video]

If you found yourself in the Windy City last weekend, there’s a chance you saw a 2013 BMW i3 electric compact cruising down the streets about a year before it goes on sale. Presumably caught in the middle of filming a commercial, evidenced by the boom truck driving next to it, the i3 was seen completely uncamouflaged as it crossed into an intersection and onto YouTube infamy.

While BMW has shot teaser trailers featuring the i3 city car and the BMW i8 sports car, most look like they were filmed abroad. On the road, the person who filmed the i3 on Wacker Drive in Chicago said it was completely silent. Judging by how much you don’t hear the i3 in this video, we’re not about to disagree.

The i3 is an all-new rear-wheel drive electric vehicle with a 170 horsepower electric motor. The i3 will use lightweight carbon fiber reinforced plastic for most of its body structure, one of the first mass-production applications of CFRP. Range should be around 100 miles when production versions hit the streets. Check out the video below.

BMW launches “The Ultimate Drive” app for sharing entertaining routes

BMW has announced the launch of a social app, “The Ultimate Drive,” that the automaker says will allow drivers to rank, comment on, and share the best roads to drive on in more than 50 countries. Users can search for routes by length, newness, or user rating, and rate them based on scenic quality, traffic, fun, and “twisties.”

The app finds the user’s location via GPS and displays stretches of road that other drivers have designated as the best in the area. When a user has designated a favorite stretch, it can be shared via email and Facebook, or sent to a GPS device or app with three clicks.

BMW said the app is designed to engage customers in the age of “gamification.” The app was designed by San Francisco technology firm SocialNav and is available for free for both Apple iOS and Android smart phones.

“A social app succeeds when it forms a community of users with similar interests. A mobile app succeeds when it shrinks that large community into something local and familiar,” said Pawan Murthy, general manager of online business for BMW Group Financial Services. “Within a few seconds of opening the app, ‘The Ultimate Drive’ connects you to driving enthusiasts who have discovered great roads in your neighborhood—roads you may have overlooked. Sharing that joy of discovery is why we are eager to launch this app to everyone.”

Although the branding is overt, the app could be used by non-BMW owners.

BMWBLOG brings you the first live photos of the new BMW i3 and i8. Unveiled today in Frankfurt, the new BMW i vehicles mark the beginning of a new era for BMW. The two vehicles were introduced in front of journalists from around the world and interesting enough, in the setting at Frankfurt Auto Show halls where the world premiere will take place next month.

The i3 is based around a light CFRP body structure and rides on a predominantly aluminum chassis. The BMW i3 provides four adult occupants with excellent all-round visibility, as well as an impressive 200 liters of luggage space behind the rear seats. BMW i3 measures 3845mm in length, 2011mm in width and 1537mm in height.

The plug-in system is a compact electric motor mounted over the rear axle. It draws energy from the battery to provide drive to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission.

With its zero-emission electric drive and a range of approximately 150 kilometers, the BMW i3 Concept has been specifically developed for use in an urban environment, its dynamic 125 kW electric motor and rear-wheel drive ensuring BMW-style dynamic handling.

At 349 horsepower and nearly 80 mpg fuel consumption, the BMW i8 will set a benchmark in the performance segment. Initially previewed by the Vision EfficientDynamics (Vision ED) concept back in 2009, the super-sporty two-door i8 has already undergone two years of intensive development. The major change is a new 1.5 liter petrol engine replacing the initial diesel unit of same capacity. The engine is mounted at the rear and drives via a dual-clutch gearbox. BMW says the i8 runs a 0-62mph in just 4.6 sec – 0.3 sec faster than the M3 Coupe.

BMW i8 measures 4632mm in length, 1955mm in width and 1280mm in height, comparable to the 3 Series coupe in dimensions.

Aftermarket exhaust system manufacturer Eisenmann unveils their exhaust system for the new BMW 1 Series M Coupe. The Hemmingen-based company will start offering two stainless steel exhaust systems for the new entry-level M model.

Along with the street legal equipment, Eisenmann will also offer its customers a racetrack-tested exhaust system. The entire exhaust system is manufactured by hand and will help the in-line six-cylinder under the hood to not only develop more sound power, but thanks to a clear airway also even more horsepower: 10 extra ponies brings the total power to 350.

Today we bring you candid photos of BMW’s new F20 1 series 5 door hatchback. On display at the global launch of BMW’s latest compact car, the 1 series M sport package was shown in Ebony Black. Changes to the exterior include both aerodynamic and stylistic improvments.

Starting at the front of the vehicle, the front air dam has been widened to accomodate larger air intakes which feed the cooling systems. We find the bold new look typical to M, both aggressive yet understated. Moving to the side valence, a more sculptured prominent line is drawn above the rocker panels, adding the appearance of muscle and weight to the car. Finally, at the rear BMW has incorperated a more aggresive and sculpted rear bumper, rounding out the look.

Press Release: News of Japan’s disaster reached nearly every human in a first world country within a day. The footage was horrifying to watch and the toll on human life and property was terrible, but even as Japan went through it’s dark moments that week there was positive mixed with the negative, hope mixed with the despair of a country living through a disaster of epic proportions.

The new 1M is a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde affair. Like the 135i, the 1M is docile on the street, just the increased exhaust note betraying it’s Mr. Hyde side. There’s an immediate difference in throttle response with the M button on.

But otherwise it’s just capable and competent. But. Get it on the track and it’s Katy bar the door. Torque? Good gawd, this is solid rocket booster torque. The 1M is seriously quick track weapon. There is a nice ‘S’ complex at Monticello that snakes it’s way uphill. It is a definite kick in the pants to be going wide open throttle through it.

This car will be track day junkies holy grail. Coming in at $47,010 delivered, young cR enthusiasts may just have to find a way to get one. It may mean Raman noodles three nights a week but it just might be worth it.

As with all BMW’s M cars – with the exception of the CSL and M3 GTS – this is no stripped-out racer. Thumb the starter button and the 335bhp 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder engine – an uprated version of the unit from the 135i – barks into life. And as soon as you pull away, it’s clear that this is a very agile, driver-focused machine. Throttle response is sharp and the steering, although heavy, is full of feel.

Extend the six-cylinder unit to the 6,500rpm red line in the lower ratios, and you’re rewarded with savage response and a zingy, metallic engine note. An M Dynamic Mode also offers a more flexible engine set-up, which can switch between relaxed and torque-oriented or tuned for maximum power at the touch of a button – but that’s as gizmo-laden as the 1-Series M Coupé gets.

G-Power takes BMW M3 GTS from 450 to 720 hp

G-Power lives up to its reputation as the tuner with the most impressive power upgrades. After breaking record with several M3, M5 or M6 models, the German tuner takes the limited and special BMW M3 GTS to a new level.

The hardcore coupe which was released last year and sold out in time record (only 150 units were ever built), is powered in its natural state by a 4.4 liter V8 engine that produces 450 horsepower. In standard configuration, BMW M3 GTS runs from standstill to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 305 km/h. But some people wanted more power and G-Power presented earlier this year their plans to upgrade the M3 GTS.

In January, the company said it will give the M3 GTS over 600 horsepower, but they have managed to exceed the expectations. The first three G-Power M3 GTSs have arrived with 720 horsepower. The engine displacement of G-Power M3 GTS was increased by 10 percent and the company also developed a special version of the their SK II CS Sporty Drive supercharger system for the BMW M3 GTS. This supercharger system also includes a rebuilt engine with special low-compression forged pistons.

Top speed and acceleration times are unknown at the moment, but we expect the G-Power M3 GTS to run to 100 km/h in under 4 seconds. More details in the near future.

Video: 2013 BMW i3 Spied During Cold Weather Testing

The first electric vehicle to launch under the new BMW i sub-brand was once again spied during cold weather testing. BMW i3 will make its official debut in 2013, but a concept version is expected to be unveiled later this year.

At launch, Megacity will be offered in a two-door, four-seat configuration. The car will measure around 157 inches. In the future, the MCV sub-brand will include two additional models.

First one due in 2015 and dubbed ICV, short Intracity Vehicle, will be a two-door, two-seat car. In 2017, UCV – Urban Commuter Vehicle -will extend the length of the initial MCV and has four doors while hosting five people.

MotorTrend Rumor: New 2012 BMW M5 to sport only Automatic transmission

A recent article published by MotorTrend makes waves in the BMW community. According to the popular US magazine, the next generation F10 BMW M5 might be the first M car available only with a fully automatic transmission.

Back in 2010, interior spy shots of the new M5 showed the prototype with an automatic transmission which according to our source is a “beefed up” version of the new ZF eight-speed found in other BMW models. The transmission will be matted to a modified 4.4 liter V8 twin-turbo engine similar to the one found in the X5M and X6M.

The two M-twins are also available with automatics only, and according to MotorTrend the decision lays with the inability of the M Dual Clutch (DCT) transmission to handle the additional torque found in the revamped engine. The powerplant is rumored to produce north of 550 horsepower and around 530 lb of torque.

UK magazine WhatCar? reviews the new 2012 BMW 6 Series Convertible. In Europe, the new 6 Series Convertible will debut on March 26, 2011 with the 640i and 650i models. A few months later, the 640d will join the line-up, including the xDrive option.

Both the 640i and 650i will join the US line-up. The entry-level 6er Convertible is powered by the N55 TwinScroll turbocharged engine. The engine produces 320 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 450Nm of torque between 1,300 and 4,500 rpm. The 640i Convertible weighs 1,840 kilograms, but still manages to run from 0 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

The car sports a sweeping hood surrounded by a muscular profile. With winter upon us in many North American regions, we would like to revive one of our previous articles on winter tires for your BMW or any other vehicle. Our own road editor Shawn Molnar shares with us some of his experience accumulated on the snowy Canadian roads.

Here is the answer.

The time is around 19:00 hours on a cold, blustery winter night. The temperature is hovering around -1 and it has been raining, a dangerous stage for icy conditions. Having left the shop with 4 new winter tires installed only that morning, what I encountered next had me kissing all four corners of my contact patch.

Traveling South bound on Windsor’s Huron Church Ave, one of North America’s busiest roads with high truck traffic, I came upon an intersection where the two right lanes of the 3 Southbound lanes were at a stand still, tens of semi trucks lumbering through first gear. With a fresh green displayed, I approach the intersection just below the speed limit, a clear lane lies ahead. With no warning or signal, a flat-bed semi-truck makes a sudden move pulling into my lane from stand-still (trucks are altogether banned from this “fast” lane on Huron Church, I guess he’s a new, careless, or drunk driver).

Hard on the brakes with a tall concrete barrier to the left and a nose-to-tail barrier of trucks to the right, I have nowhere to go. Visions of my seemingly imminent decapitation loom close, the flat bed trailer lying like opened scissors across the road ahead, at approximately the height of my dash. Feathering the brakes I play with the limit of tire adhesion to the road, attempting to burn off velocity as if my life depended on it, because, my life depended on it. As I closed in on the last few feet of remaining asphalt, I was amazed to bring the car to a complete stop. The truck driver who cut off my lane had his truck at a full stop, realizing his trailer did not have enough space to complete the lane change without side swiping the truck in front. Both of us at a stand still, my hood about 2 feet from the sharp metal edge of his trailer, a moment of clarity dawned. I literally owed my life to the tires I had just purchased – because any less traction on that slippery, freezing night would have resulted in my obituary and a very small inheritance debt passed on to my beneficiaries.

2012 BMW 1-series Coupe and Convertible – Car News

Introduced on our shores as 2008 models, the 1-series coupe and convertible saw their first major upgrades for 2011: a single-turbo engine for the 135i and a newly optional dual-clutch automated manual transmission. It seems BMW can’t leave well enough alone, as the company has already announced some additional—but subtle—changes for the 2012 1er coupe and convertible.

It’ll take a serious Bimmerphile to spot them, though. New headlight units feature frosted brows but otherwise appear very similar to the current car’s. The taillights now match those of other current BMWs, incorporating hockey-stick-style accents; these are rendered with LEDs on cars equipped with active xenon headlamps.

Both the 128i coupe and convertible will come standard with what BMW calls “air curtain,” which is basically special ducting built into the front fascia. This new system, which was first announced for the upcoming 1-series M coupe, routes air from a pair of intakes in the front fascia to the outsides of the front wheels, forming a high-speed wall, or “curtain,” that smoothes airflow in that area. The 135i forgoes this efficiency-minded series of tubes and instead comes standard with the M Sport body kit, which continues as an option for 128i coupes and convertibles as well.

Inside, the 1er gets new switchgear. A new gloss white (can we call it piano white?) trim option joins the lineup—it has a clean look, and should hide the inevitable scratches better than shiny black trim does.

These likely will be the last tweaks to the first-gen 1-series, as a new model should arrive for 2013. We'll get our first in-person look at the 2012 1-series in Detroit next month, and the cars will go on sale in April 2011.

First Look: 2011 BMW X3

When introduced here in 2004, the BMW X3 popularized the market niche of the compact upscale sporty SUV. I admit, that sounds rather esoteric. But the X3 spawned a raft of competitors including the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLK, and Volvo XC60.

Imitation might be the sincerest form of flattery, but the X3’s 2004-2010 model run is a long time in the current market place. Even though it had a 2007 update that greatly enhanced interior quality and (with less success) improved the stiff ride, it was getting long-in-the-tooth. It was also overpriced.
So the time had certainly come for the X3’s 2011 redesign. Production moved from Austria to South Carolina, and BMW chopped $2,000 off of the base price.

We recently took a first look at the new X3 to get a preview of what the redesign has to offer. We’ll shortly buy one to put through our full test program here at the Consumer Reports test track.

Another BMW fan shares his experience aboard the 1 Series M Coupe at the recent Leipzig plant. Woland’s Advocate, a member of 1addicts, offers a comprehensive review of his 1M test drive.

“I was one of the two UK participants. As a lawyer who took copies of everything I was required to sign, I can tell you that we are not under any contractual obligations to not make negative comments (as some have uncharitably suggested). BMW were very good hosts and went out of their way to ensure we were well looked after as you can imagine.

Personally, obviously I am not a professional road-tester and nor am I even a weekend track warrior, but I think this car is going to be great. It won’t be for that vocal minority looking for a stripped-out screamer, but the rest of us will I suspect think it is fantastic, rather as Chris Harris appears to.

It feels much more different from the 135i than you’d expect and actually a bit more like an E92 M3. In fact, I’d guess that BMW had the E46 M3 in mind when developing this car. Part of this is down to the revised quad exhaust system, which provides a bassy, almost hollow, soundtrack that is noticeably more complex and potent-sounding than my 135i (which is fitted with a Performance Exhaust), even if it is perhaps a touch quieter than the racket the Performance Exhaust makes. Definitely provides plenty of aural pleasure though.

The car comes with an “M” button on the steering wheel similar to that found on the E92 M3. Personally, once I’d found it, I left it permanently on for the improved throttle response. As standard, the 1M has a sharper, more responsive feel than the 135i, but engaging the M button definitely gives the car a welcome further dose of alacrity when you brush the accelerator. And brushing the accelerator reveals that this car feels much more eager than the 135i and is genuinely rapid. It may not be very much quicker in absolute terms, but it certainly feels it – on the autobahn you are doing 120mph+ before you can bat an eyelid. And that was with three people on board and in absolutely bucketing rain. The engine is astonishingly flexible with bags of torque to spare, so even at motorway speeds, strong effortless acceleration is available without shifting down from sixth. But when shifting is this slick, that would be a pity, especially given the engine’s epic mid-range punch. The gearshift’s throw has been shortened and the box on the car I tried was largely slick and intuitive – you can lightly flick it between gears with speed and precision. Only a couple of power downshifts from third to second on the circuit session were a bit baulky and required a firm hand (but that may be me!). The clutch is perhaps heavier but not noticeably so. The steering actually feels lighter but, as ever, doesn’t provide a whole heap of feel through the typically plump steering wheel rim.

When it comes to ordering long-term test vehicles, we often choose stuff that’s fared well in previous evaluations, and we usually load them up with options—case in point: our $100,000-plus long-term BMW 750Li xDrive. The idea, of course, is to see if our infatuation with a new model can stand the test of time; and to test the newest and best gadgets and technologies.

Our long-term 5-series contradicts both conventions. Indeed, a 535i just finished behind an Audi A6 3.0T and an Infiniti M37 in a comparison test, and we didn’t go option crazy with this one. We selected just two key extras we couldn’t live without (the $2200 Sport package and the $2700 Dynamic Handling package) and two that we could live without, but didn’t want to (Cinnamon Brown leather for $1450 and an overpriced iPod connector for $400). We passed on the opportunity to test one piece of new technology by requesting a six-speed manual transmission over the new ZF eight-speed automatic, but made sure to check the box for the new single-turbo inline-six because we haven’t had one for more than a couple of weeks at a time.

2012 BMW 1-series M Coupe - Prototype Drive

Finally, a more affordable M car. It’s only expected to cost, uh, $43,000.

The 1-series M coupe is proof that BMW really cares about the little guy. This hottest 1er is BMW’s attempt to counter criticism that its M cars, particularly the M3, have become too big and too expensive. According to M GmbH head Kay Segler: “The car should be affordable for younger customers, but still has to be a serious M product.” Of course, affordability is all relative. It’s likely that the 1-series M (don’t call it an M1, please, out of respect for the '70s supercar) will start at about $43,000 when it goes on sale in the U.S. in early summer. That’s practically entry-level in BMW-land, where even a stripped 135i costs $37,225.

The most obvious evidence of M intervention is the car’s wider body shell. Even though the car pictured here is camouflaged, it’s clear that the wheel arches are flared significantly; they accommodate a front track widened by 2.4 inches and a rear blown out by 3.1 inches. Other bodywork changes from the 135i include monster vents in the front fascia: The center scoop is for engine cooling while those below the headlights draw air in for the brakes. The exterior also features an M3-inspired trunklid lip spoiler and quad exhaust tips.

Hydrogen fuel cell-powered forklifts, tuggers and stackers will be used in BMW’s new assembly hall that produces the new BMW X3 Sports Activity Vehicle®.

Fuel cells take stored chemical energy, such as hydrogen in this case, and convert it into electrical energy through two internal electrochemical reactions. The only byproducts of hydrogen fuel cells are heat and water, making this energy choice more efficient than other, more conventional energy sources.

2011 BMW Alpina B7 – Short Take Road Test

Sehr geschmeidig. German for “very smooth.” Smooth power (and plenty of it), no waiting. Smooth ride (always a BMW virtue, even with B7 handling mods). Smooth, understated good looks (making it easier to startle owners of lesser luxury sedans when you tramp on the throttle and disappear).

That’s a big part of this super 7’s raison d’être: one-upping the other guys without being too obvious about it. Like its predecessor, the new B7 begins life as the latest BMW 750 (in either long- or short-wheelbase form) and is then massaged by Alpina, the go-faster shop that’s more or less umbilically attached to BMW.

But wait: Doesn’t BMW have an in-house tuner, the M division? Alpina’s distinction has been rooted in a more luxurious approach to performance. That distinction has been blurring, but there’s no denying the B7’s luxury quotient. In addition to Alpina’s trademark, blue-hued gauge package, the standard 750i interior is enhanced by a couple acres of satiny Lavalina leather, a company exclusive.
Exterior distinctions include an Alpina front fascia with additional air intakes and a deeper air dam that reduces lift, according to Alpina; a revised rear fascia; a spoiler that also diminishes lift; and a set of beautiful, 21-inch aluminum wheels.

BMW Announces Launch Markets for ActiveE Electric 1-series

BMW has announced the U.S. markets in which its ActiveE electric car will be available for lease. The cars will be available by summer 2011 in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, and Sacramento, California; Boston; and the New York City metropolitan area, which will include select cities in Connecticut. As it did with the electric Mini E, BMW is leasing the vehicles to real people as a way to garner feedback and evaluate the durability, performance, and feasibility of the electric drivetrain. The company hasn’t yet determined how many vehicles will be available or how much the leases will cost. (Mini leased 450 Mini Es to U.S. drivers for $850 per month starting in mid-2009.)

To refresh: the BMW ActiveE debuted in concept form at this past January’s Detroit auto show; it’s a 1-series coupe with a fully electric drivetrain. The lithium-ion battery pack is said to provide up to 100 miles of range per full charge, and much of the ActiveE’s powertrain will see use in the 2013 BMW Megacity vehicle. BMW says the four-seat ActiveE—the Mini E seats just two, sacrificing its tiny rear seats to the battery pack—will offer similar driving dynamics to the gasoline 1-series, although dynamics don’t equal performance; the claimed 8.5-second 0-to-60-mph run and top speed of 90 mph pale in comparison to even the 128i’s 5.8-second and 145-mph figures.

Car Magazine: BMW M3 GTS, CSL, Sport Evo – which is the greatest M3?

Car Magazine feels adventurous this week and gives us an interesting comparison, this time, between three BMW vehicles that have and will keep their place in the history of the brand. The latest and greatest M3 GTS is being measured against the M3 Sport Evo and everyone’s favorite, M3 CSL.

“The BMW M3 GTS is a car of superlatives. It is the fastest, most powerful, most track-focussed, most expensive M3 ever, a two-fingered salute to the critics who said the M Division had lost its way after SUV-gate.

Okay, but how does it compare with previous über-M3s, and how does it move the game on versus the most focussed new M3 that doesn’t wear the GTS badge – the Competition Pack?

Now, I’m sure there’ll be plenty of arguments about this, but for me the GTS’s key in-house benchmarks from previous generations are the E30 Sport Evo and the E46 M3 CSL. No E36s? No. We could have included the E36 M3 Lightweight, but that was North American-only, and therefore featured the lower-power US engine – we’d sooner have a Euro engine. We could have dropped in the E36 M3 R, but these were Aussie-only and essentially built for a race series. Dismissed. Perhaps we could have chosen the left-hand drive E36 M3 GT. Mmm, not quite hardcore enough in this company, but a great car nonetheless. Ah, the perils of an M3 greatest hits – feel free to grumble in the comments section below!

BMW hopes to get out from under the gas-guzzler taxes

Jim O’Donnell, president of BMW of North America, says the company is studying fuel-efficiency improvements that could eliminate the gas-guzzler taxes on its vehicles as early as the launch of their redesigns in the next few years.

For year 2010, several BMW models incur a gas-guzzler fee. For example, the BMW 550i GT and 750i get “hit” with a $1,000 fee, the 650i Convertible faces a $1,300 tax.

In an interview for Automotive News, O’Donnell said that BMW would like to get away from it across the entire lineup and the gas-guzzler label slapped on a BMW is what they company is trying to avoid.

The Gas Guzzler Tax is a Federal excise tax applied to the domestic sale of new vehicles that don’t meet certain fuel economy standards. Vehicles that get at least 22.5 mpg (combined) don’t have to pay the Gas Guzzler Tax. The Tax rate goes from $1,000 for vehicles that get at least 21.5 mpg (combined), but less than 22.5 mpg (combined) all the way up to $7,700 for vehicles that get less than 12.5 mpg (combined).

BMW’s smaller competitor, Infiniti, moved its new-generation M56 sedan out of gas-guzzler status this year. It did so despite increasing horsepower from the previous-generation M sedan, which competes directly against the BMW 5 series.

Rumor: Future BMW X4, X3 35iS, X3M

The usual BMW insider, Scott26, returns with some news around the BMW brand. As always, some of these bits of information are controversial and difficult to cross-check at the moment, so take them with a grain of salt.

First, the highly rumored BMW X4 seems to be indeed on the drawing board at BMW. Due to the record sales in the X-family, including the new X1, a downsized X6 would have its place in the segment. The design will follow the X6’s lines and will share underpinnings, interiors, engines, technology and manufacturing with the BMW X3.

Without any further ado, let’s have a look at this report:

When X5 was introduced in 1999, we [BMW] went straight to the top of the segment bBy offering a car-like Sport Activity Vehicle. Customers appreciated that its core BMW attributes were enhanced and kept intact by the introduction of the X5.
When we [BMW] introduced X3 in 2003, we [BMW] created a new segment for a premium medium class Sport Activity Vehicle. A car that sits below 700,000 units sold since introduction and about to be replaced by the second generation X3.
In 2006, we introduced the second generation of X5 and inherited the E53 X5’s crown at the top of the segment. In late 2007, we introduced a new Concept to the Sport Activity field , an SAV with the appearance of a Coupe and the worlds first Sport Activity Coupe: The BMW X6.

When it comes to actual SUV capabilities, many of us know that the Sports Activity Vehicles are not comparable to other SUV manufacturers. Despite the raised seating position and strong performance, the BMW SAVs are more suitable to for the Munich roads rather than on the slopes.

But the question is: does the BMW X1 even fall into the SAV category? Does it act more like a Lifestyle Product, only formally carrying the “X title” in its name, and otherwise portraying a practical alternative to a BMW 1 Series?

We will leave the classification up to each individual, but after only a few meters spent driving in the X1 xDrive28i, one can tell that this SAV feels more comfortable on the asphalt. The suspension is more reminiscent of a sport-tuned 3 Series than an SUV, but that has always been a characteristic of a BMW Sports Activity Vehicle.

Back in April, BMWBLOG brought you the first photos of a Power Green painted BMW. The Individual color was first spotted on a BMW 120i Coupe at a German dealership near Leipzig.

Today, courtesy of Mboard.com we have the first photos of the very same color featured on a BMW M3 Coupe. Not many details are known around this particular model, but most likely this has been a custom order directly from the Individual catalog.

BMW Individual was established in 1991 as a division of M GmbH with the goal of leading the trend towards more individuality by concentrating on customers who were looking for made-to-measure solutions and making tougher demands on their BMW in terms of distinction, design and function.

Now in its 5th iteration, BMW’s 5 series sedan has undergone many evolutionary changes along the way. Starting its life in 1972 as a midsize sport sedan for the times, it has continually grown in size, strength, intelligence and power.

While our BMW Z4 sDrive35is review is going through some final touches, let’s take a look at the test drive posted by LA Times. The new upgraded, more powerful Z4is went public at the Detroit Auto Show when the 2011 roadster opened the doors for more “is” performance oriented vehicles.

The sDrive35is carries under the hood an upgraded version of the popular N54 engine or in everybody’s language, the award winning six-cylinder 3.0 liter twin-turbo engine. The tuned up engine produces 335 horsepower (340hp in Europe) at 5,900 rpm and 332 lb-ft in “regular mode”. An electronically-controlled overboost function can briefly increase torque under full load by another 37 lb-ft. This brings the torque peak to 369 lb-ft.

The engine is matted to 7-speed Double-Clutch Transmission (DCT) with SPORT and SPORT+ driving modes. The DCT also features a Launch Control function for maximum performance when accelerating from a standstill. BMW sDrive35is weighs 1,525 kg (3,362 lbs).

Engines made by BMW and MINI win awards in four out of eight capacity classes

Munich/Stuttgart. Success in four out of eight capacity classes put the BMW Group in a dominating position at the “International Engine of the Year Awards” this year. Among the award-winning power units at the world’s most renowned engine competition were both petrol and diesel engines with four, six and eight cylinders. The victorious quartet consisted of the V8 engine of the BMW M3, the inline 6-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo, direct injection and VALVETRONIC, used in such vehicles as the BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series and BMW 5 Series, the 4-cylinder diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo from the BMW X1 xDrive 23d and the BMW 123d, and the 4-cylinder Twin Scroll Turbo engine of the MINI Cooper S.
